The
year 1855 brought the plotting out of main street Atlantic.
Thirteen years later, in 1868, Franklin Whitney purchased
the land on which the hotel stands today. Just two years
later, in 1870, the land switched ownership to J. H. Needles and
J. A. McWade.
In 1889 they constructed a two-story building which housed the
local harness factory and John Deere implement dealership.
In 1930, Needles sold the building to the Atlantic Hotel Corporation,
headed by Edward A. Boss.
A third floor was added and in 1931 and the Boss Hotel opened.
The '50s saw the hotel change hands and was renamed the Whitney
Motor Inn.
From a family retirement community and gift shop in 1979 (owned
and operated by Duane Becker, father of the present day owner),
to a restaurant in the early 1990's (Chestnut Tree Cafe), to it's
present ownership,
Main Street Grill and Whitney Inn has become a beloved landmark,
not only in its hometown of Atlantic, Iowa, but throughout the
surrounding area. |
